NEWS FLASH: Raw Photo Design Merges with Carla Ten Eyck Photography

For the past month or so Amber and I have been working on one of the most significant and far-reaching decisions we’ve ever made since starting this business. Throughout the whole process I’ve been trying to find an easy way to describe our partnership with Carla Ten Eyck Photography. Is it like a company merger? Is her company “buying us out”? Hmm… At 1am on my way home from one of our weddings this past weekend, the perfect representation popped into my head (which is how most of my ideas seem to happen).

We’re forming like VOLTRON baby! Yep, you heard right….we’re joining our individual strengths and forces together to form a super robot to defend the galaxy from evil

This is EXACTLY how it all went down at the C10 Studios headquarters!!

Ok well, we still have a long way to go before we’re able to maintain peace throughout the universe but this is a huge step in the right direction for Raw Photo Design. If you haven’t heard through the grapevine or seen on Facebook, numerous wedding forums, or twitter lately but we kind of suck at managing our business. The number of times I’ve heard the following sentence from a past client makes my stomach turn upside down and keeps me up at night trying to find a way to make things better: “Raw Photo was so awesome on the day of my wedding/boudoir/portrait/editorial/etc and I’m absolutely in love with all of my pictures…. but, it takes too long to get an email reply or phone call from them and it took a long time to get my pictures/album/disc/etc.”

Similar to most wedding photographers I started a photography business because I loved PHOTOGRAPHY. I loved working with people during their photo shoot or wedding day and capturing beautiful photographs of them. My single most favorite aspect of this job is witnessing the progression a person (or couple) goes through during a shoot… everyone always starts very nervous and insecure and somewhere in the middle of the process, they get comfortable… let their guard down, and the real them comes out…and that’s when I get to capture who they really are… You can almost see the exact moment it happens at every single session when you look at a series of photo thumbnails on your monitor. I can honestly work on anything photography related all night long without even noticing it’s 3am or that I haven’t left my desk in 6 hours. There’s no doubt it’s my passion and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

BUT, that has NOTHING to do with running a business. I’ll be the first to admit I am absolutely clueless when it comes to managing clients, employees, subcontractors, or anything else related to my business. It’s not because I haven’t done the work to learn how to properly do these things…trust me. I’ve read countless business books…some of them at least 5 times, attended numerous business workshops and seminars, downloaded every “management application” you can think of, etc. Conceptually I “know” what to do but just have no clue how to follow through with the processes and/or manage the people that I had implementing those processes.

Fast forward 5 years later to the beginning of October, 2012 and I had decided to shut Raw Photo Design down for good. I had been turning down new business for months explaining that I will no longer take new clients for the 2013 wedding season and focus all my attention on the weddings I had already booked for next year. I was stressed out beyond belief, hopeless, and defeated. Amber and I had done the best we could do with what we had and that was it. We were working like machines, day and night, and not a single client was happy. Being a typical man with too much pride, I hadn’t told anyone about our situation or my decision to dissolve the business; and being a typical woman who is way smarter than her typical man-husband, Amber had reached out to a number of close friends explaining our situation and asking for help.

Carla had been a close friend of ours for years and had seen us progress from our first wedding to our 100th wedding and has always been a huge help and inspiration since day one. She manages a well-oiled production MACHINE in Hartford. Sometimes I pull up to her driveway and I can hear the mechanical wheels turning, phones ringing off the hook, and production lines in full swing. Their customer service is incredible and a force to be reckoned with. It is pretty impressive to see and trust me…Amber and I did everything we could to implement the same system…in fact, Carla and I had first started meeting once a week a while back so that she could walk me through setting up the same system for Raw Photo. After 3 meetings or so it was pretty clear we were far beyond the point of no return and Carla presented me with a solution that her and Amber had been thought of and been working on….without me knowing!

wedding photo studio partnership

It was an offer I could not refuse. Especially since the only other option was to throw in the towel. Starting today, the C10 Studio Management Team will be responsible for ALL of the client-related office tasks and back-end studio work for RAW Photo Design including all emails, phone calls, albums, production, and delivery of finished products. Now all RAW Photo Design clients will finally get what Amber and I had TRIED to provide and what they absolutely deserve more then anything: the same AMAZING customer service that C10 Studio Management Team of Dominique, Julie, Rebecca, Dave, Jazzy and Philitha have been providing for Carla and her associates for years!

Where does that leave Amber and myself? It leaves us focusing ALL of our attention, time, and resources on where they should be: the creative work. This is what we are good at, enjoy doing, and jump out of bed in the morning just thinking of it. It is why I started the business in the first place…THE PHOTOGRAPHY….NOT the business. I’m drooling just thinking about it, “You mean I get to do what I’ve always wanted to do and you will do the rest?” I swear it is Christmas a month early at the Langlois household and I just got the gift of photography for the first time in 4 years!

The finer details are being sent to existing clients as everyone is reading this but in a nutshell RAW Photo Design will still be OUR brand…same website, same look, same awesomeness. Zero portion of the photography, retouching, or awesome sauce that has defined the RAW Photo brand and style will change because Amber and myself will still be in charge of all of it. In fact, it will only improve and thrive now that we don’t have to spend so much time on what we suck at: business. We’ll finally get to spend all of our time and energy on the reason I started this business in the first place: photography.

Wedding at The Boston Public Library in Boston, MA | Maryam & Dante

Maryam and Dante were married in a classic Boston landmark “that houses all the great love stories”.

Let’s all agree, no introduction needed.
Although I could blab for days about Maryam and Dante’s Boston Public Library wedding, the pictures alone exceed the minimal standard for satisfaction. It’s all just yummy.

modern bridal photos public library wedding copley plaza urban wedding pictures fairmont copley plaza wedding pictures

When it comes to cities, Eric and I are way more “New York” than “Boston”, not sure why really, probably just because New York is closer we feel much more at home there. However, our little excursion to Boston for Maryam & Dante’s wedding (including a 2-night stay at the luxurious Fairmont Copley Plaza) has made us believers in the Beantown. A wedding in the historic and iconic Boston Public Library, a radical couple, and a super cooperative, chill bridal party may have also had something to do with it.

modern bridal photos public library wedding copley plaza urban wedding pictures fairmont copley plaza wedding pictures

And here we go, from the top.

We start the day with my coverage of the guys getting ready at Maryam and Dante’s apartment, which was a block away from where Eric was covering the girls in Copley Plaza.
BTW, Maryam and Dante’s adorable little Yorkie almost made it into my camera bag, I’m in love.

After covering the guys, who take about 5 minutes to get ready, I headed back to the Fairmont in Copley Plaza to cover details and the girls getting ready with Eric. If you ever stay in Boston, you gotta stay at this hotel, just sayin’.

And something about this moment that Eric captured of Maryam in the mirror, really gets me. We shoot mirror reflections often during getting ready, but this – through the veil is AMAZE.

modern bridal photos public library wedding copley plaza urban wedding pictures fairmont copley plaza wedding pictures

And the first look right outside the Fairmont made the perfect backdrop – it is unreal to me how dynamic and inspiring shooting wedding pictures in the city can be. Eye candy overkill.

The ceremony location in the courtyard of the library was jaw dropping, needless to say I learned why the Boston Public Library in Copley Plaza was proclaimed a “palace for the people” when it opened in 1895.

“Are you the last person in New York still taking out library books?” “I love the smell.”

I’ll let you guess that quote…

Newport, RI wedding at Belle Mer | Rebecca & Jonathan

To get the most out of your wedding photographer, be like Rebecca and Jonathan. why?

US:
Are there any specific locations that you would like your group photos and couple portraits to be taken?

REBECCA & JONATHAN:
Nope! Be creative, we are up for anything!

I don’t want to freak anyone out, but this little question is unbelievably revealing. I have seen so many responses to this question…varying from nothing, to long paragraphs with attachments and pages of inspiration pictures for us to recreate.

Rebecca & Jonathan got it right on so many levels. The idea is that you hire wedding professionals that you love, that you trust, right? And…you have hired these people to do what they do so that you can enjoy this life changing event with family, friends and the love of your life, right? You have collaborated with uniquely talented people that are fueled by artistic instinct, yet inspired by unpredictable moments, people and environments.

Eric’s vision and creative impulse is like nothing I have ever seen on a wedding day, when you trust him and let that energy roll, he will blow your mind.

Let go.

I have nothing but gratitude and appreciation for Rebecca and Jonathan’s unwavering trust and enthusiasm, it was a privilege for us to photograph your wedding day.

Oh, and men wearing colorful argyle socks also make me happy.

Orchids.
I can’t tell you how much I learn blogging, it takes me forever because I end up reading and researching the most RANDOM things. But I love it, who doesn’t want to know the history of the Lobster Roll?! Anyway, if you have not noticed, this particular wedding had some insane orchids going on. Did you know that “The number of orchid species equals more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species.” whoa.

Wedding at Saratoga National Golf Club, Saratoga Springs, NY | Chrissy & Todd

Photographing our second Stack Family Wedding in Saratoga Springs, NY was nothing short of a-mazing! I LOVE this family, I feel like I must have told Eric 10 times throughout the day that I want the Stack’s to adopt me.

This is the sweetest, kindest, most genuine family ever – we love them and we love Saratoga Springs, NY. Chrissy and Todd’s wedding was, without a doubt, record-breaking temperatures and these two were troopers, did not complain!

Even though I swore Eric and I were melting, the bride, Chrissy looked completely flawless the entire day.
So, here are a few favs.

the saratoga national golf club wedding photos saratoga springs new york

This is the year of Go Big and it seems that the bridal parties we have been shooting rival small armies…rock that wide lens and line ‘em up (I also prefer to let a few peeps leave their shades on, have a few take their jackets off, and the bride and groom make a much stronger statement OFF CENTER, right?!

the get ready. The girls got ready at the Stack house in Saratoga Springs, New York…which is unbelievable (see above, crazy right?). I have for-serious molding and front porch envy that you will soon share, just wait till you see the beautiful backdrop that their home provided for details, getting ready, the first look and then obviously…we couldn’t resist taking some bridal portraits.

Sometimes the moment that a father sees his daughter in her wedding gown for the first time just gives me goosebumps, and then sometimes I am moved to also wipe the tears away from behind my camera…and THIS was one of those times. so sweet, so perfect.

A beautiful church + ceremony.

the saratoga national golf club wedding photos saratoga springs new york

the saratoga national golf club wedding photos saratoga springs new york

To our final destination, the exquisite Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, NY. I have to give credit where credit is due, because I have never seen a golf course like this…the CT country clubs that we have been to (or photographed weddings at) are never this beautiful, manicured…and GREEN. We were walking a very fine line because we had a big group of dudes (in suits) in 95 degree weather…I am sure you can do the math – they get cranky.

So…we know we gotta work quickly, but, the best move we made all day was letting those guys take off their jackets…and I gotta say, these pictures suffered NONE.

Since this was a destination wedding, we had no Rob. And I really need me some Rob at weddings, especially hot ones with big bridal parties, and lots ‘o heavy lights. Before we set off on our golf cart portrait adventure with Chrissy and Todd I tried to pitch the whole “I’ll hold the reflector and we can rock this light without flash, get some nice buttery light in the shade – leave the White Lightning here”…clearly we can see who won that debate. I gotta admit, it was hot and heavy, but I am so happy Eric stuck to his guns because this shot is Straight Up Helicopters!

And…we had to partake in The Blue Hour on the golf course, glad Todd and Chrissy were game!

the saratoga national golf club wedding photos saratoga springs new york

the saratoga national golf club wedding photos saratoga springs new york

So, the wedding food at The Saratoga National Golf Club was over the top – we were fed very well! And I was blown away by the 50′s spread they busted out the last hour with sliders, fries, beer battered onion rings, and mini shakes…big time SCORE.

To say the least…this was a beautiful day.

Mallard Island Yacht Club Wedding in Long Beach Island NJ | Corinne & Matt

Bon Jovi was in full effect. And a fist pump (or two) may have occurred on the dance floor, but clearly Corinne & Matt did not have the typical “Jersey Shore” wedding.

The Mallard Island Yacht Club is a stunning venue, surrounded by Barnegat Bay, and right before the bridge to Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore. LBI is a favorite family vacation spot of ours, and Corrine & Matt’s wedding day also happened to be our wedding anniversary, so we were absolutely thrilled to be with such a great couple and working together at such an awesome wedding.

Check out some of these favorites from the day…it was nearly impossible to choose.

One insanely awesome perk about traveling for destination weddings is exploring new venues and working with awesome local vendors, and there was some off-the-wall talent that brought Corinne & Matt’s day together beautifully.

Wedding Location: The Mallard Island Yacht Club / Caterer: Merri Makers Catering / Makeup: Magnifique Makeup by Dominique / Hair Styling: Aqua Blue Salon in LBI / Guys getting ready: The Drifting Sands Resort / Floral Design: MDS Floral Design / Stationary Design: Stephanie Somodi / Gown designed by Ines Di Santo via Bridal Reflections / Bride’s shoes by Benjamin Adams / Videographer: Thomas Morlock of Vantage Point Films / DJ: Craig Scott Entertainment

A very big shout out to the florists, MDS Floral Design, they are also a part of the Style Me Pretty Little Black Book, and we would be lucky to work with them again, you’ll see, their work speaks for itself. Our apologies to Stephanie Somodi for mistakingly leaving her out of the credits for the gorgeous custom designed wedding invitation chandelier ensemble, as well as they’re hand made Swarovski crystal table cards.

To jump right in…we start off with my coverage of the guys getting ready at The Drifting Sands Resort. Meanwhile, Eric stayed back to cover the girls finishing hair and makeup in the awesome bridal suite – it is the entire top floor of The Mallard Island Yacht Club! I don’t think there is a guy out there that would not love the “Groom Shack”, another awesome and unique feature of The Mallard Island Yacht Club. I suppose they had to do something for the guys to compete with that epic bridal suite. For us, it was a no brainer to shoot the guys just hanging out in their shack.

The other awesomeness on The Mallard Island Yacht Club property (in itself a damn good reason to have a wedding there) is the “Boat House” ceremony venue. It is surrounded by water on all sides, has huge windows that allow amazing light to pour in, and there is a really great stone fireplace. I was blown away how the space became more and more beautiful as the day progressed while the light flowing through continued to change.

Newport Beach Wedding at The Atlantic Beach Club in RI | Jennifer & AJ

Jennifer & AJ are one of those couples that look like they walked off the page of a bridal magazine, they fit together so well and compliment each other in a big way. We were so excited to be heading back to Newport Rhode Island recently to photograph their beach side wedding at The Atlantic Beach Club in Middletown, RI. Joanne did a great job as second photographer, and despite some very “challenging” weather — these wedding images completely rock.

And here are a few of our favorites.

Now I know that Eric’s sense of humor may not have been so humorous had he tried to convey what was going through his mind in this moment taking the next picture. Obviously, 50 mph winds and ominous skies are not on any brides wedding day shot list. With that said, we like to keep it light and have learned to embrace whatever Mother Nature throws our way, while getting the best possible pictures.

Some advice? Forget the weather and enjoy your wedding day….
Unfortunately, the bridal party does not always share this same viewpoint. Luckily, Eric has been married long enough to know that when girls get cold – they are NOT happy, so we never lose sight of how important it is that we keep the bridal party content, warm, distracted (there are a handful of pictures that really depend on them)…and a few drinks close by never hurts. Jennifer wanted pictures on the beach, so Joanne and Eric made that happen – and I think that we all agree that they were able to capture a pretty perfect shot.

Amber’s absolute favorite hotel in the world is the Delano in South Beach, Miami. When she made reservations for me to take her to dinner there :) I was in awe of the sleek, clean modern lines. White, understated, minimal, tranquil are the things that we are both attracted to…we just thought that it only existed in South Beach. Spend a minute on the Belle Mer Newport website and you know instantly that this venue, located on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island is really special. Very few venues in New England stand out in the same way that Belle Mer does, because while timeless and elegant, Belle Mer epitomizes contemporary chic and modern glamour. To say the very least, we fell in love with this place.

Lucky for us, Kelly and Dan were the perfect couple to photograph for our first Belle Mer wedding, they were up for anything, had beautiful weather for early April, and a completely great group of family and friends to support them! We are sooo fortunate to be hitting up Belle Mer again in a little while but, for now, enjoy the awesomeness that are Kelly & Dan!

Top pics of the day. 2011 is all about raising the bar, right? So this image might be a top 5 favorite that we have EVER taken, and if they don’t want a canvas of this hanging in their living room – then we are just going to have to hang it up in ours. Kelly and Dan could not look more stunning in front of the sparkling Narragansett Bay backdrop at sunset which includes the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge in the distance.

Wedding at The Rivercrest Golf Club in Phoenixville, PA | Keri & Ray

Photographing Keri and Ray’s awesome wedding was reason enough for Nicole Taylor and myself to travel to The Rivercrest Golf Club in Pennsylvania. We do love a good out of town wedding, there is just something about a change of scenery that is refreshing and inspiring all at the same time. Thank you to Nicole Taylor for traveling and shooting this wedding with me, good times as always.

Wedding at The Popponesset Inn in Cape Cod, Mass. | Kate & Andrew

The biggest struggle I had with these wedding images was not making them ALL in color, I love me some black and white action, but the color is oozing awesome in these pictures, agreed? And if the pictures below from Kate & Andrew’s wedding do not make you miss summer already, then I am convinced nothing will. Kate and Andrew had an absolutely stunning tent wedding at The Popponesset Inn in Cape Cod, Massachussetts, check it out.

The sky was EPIC the entire wedding day, constantly changing and made for some pretty sweet shots!

A few, hands down favorites from the day to tantalize.

Montreal Bridal Session in Quebec, Canada | Nancy & Fred

One Dilemma that we face as wedding photographers is that there are only so many Saturdays in a year! It wouldn’t be as much of an issue if you were all into February weddings, but the limited season in the Northeast – makes our availability even slimmer. Why am I complaining? Well…Eric’s cousin Nancy and her fiance contacted us 6 months prior to their scheduled wedding in Banff, Alberta, Canada and guess what? We were booked. Banff is a place that we have heard absolutely amazing things about and is on our list of places we must shoot a wedding at, and, turning down a relative or close friend is always a total buzz kill!

The Compromise. We had plans to visit family in Canada, so obviously, a day after bridal session for Nancy and Fred in Montreal, Canada HAD to be on the itinerary. Although we visit family in Canada a few times a year, we did not know exactly what to expect from this shoot. There is a bit of a language barrier since all of the Langlois’ primarily speak french, but these two (I am sure you will agree)…COMPLETELY KILLED it. The images are mind blowing, they rocked the posing, gave us some smoking hot expressions, and were completely in love. We absolutely fell in love with every part of Montreal and honestly did NOT want to leave. It was one of those locations that (I’m sure all you photographers can relate) can take wedding and bridal session photos at all daaaaay looooong. The excitement just could NOT be contained and with every photo we took we fell more in love with the architecture and personality that Montreal had to offer.

It was SO much fun photographing Nancy & Fred after their wedding, and being in kick-a** city as cool as Montreal was icing on the cake.

We primarily shot in the Old Montreal area of the city which is definitely one of the coolest urban areas I’ve ever visited. Here, Nancy and Fred are rockin’ it in front of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel right near the Port of Montreal.

One of the coolest aspects of Montreal, especially from a photographer’s stand point is how different each section of the city looks with just a short walk. Here we are in the Port of Montreal featuring modern art work and colors, only minutes from the gothic style architecture so prevalent in the Old Montreal section of the city.

Of course….before we ask anyone to run across traffic with a wedding dress on we better have our lighting and composition down first. So….here’s Amber testing out our lighting set-up. The expression on the guy’s face in the background is priceless!!

So….this was the last photo we got from the day right before we got BUSTED!!!! It was actually pretty funny but we got busted by the Port Authority of Montreal and they were PISSED! Apparently taking photos on trains in the Port is NOT cool according to them. I wanted to show them the picture to prove that yes indeed, it is cool. But decided not to. I was so proud of Amber when I saw her finger on her shutter grabbing photos (not bad for not looking in the viewfinder!)

Wedding at The Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island | Allyson & Bryan

This was a biggie, we cannot even try to pretend that we were not looking forward to this wedding for months.

We immediately hit it off with Allyson & Bryan at our initial meeting, Allyson is a producer at MTV (where I was a production intern) and we happened to know some of the same people, it is such a small world! But, the real reason why we could not contain ourselves leading up to this wedding is because we were going to be photographing the first wedding at the newly renovated Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. After you absorb the stunning images below, hop back up here and click the link above to check this venue out. No shock, the Ocean House definitely exceeded our expectations, being there, you cannot help but feel like you are in another era, or one of Gatsby’s gala guests.

Despite shaky weather we were able to get some portrait time outside on the beach with the Ocean House’s great yellow umbrellas, the weather even held off so that Allyson & Bryan’s ceremony could be held outside as planned. The detailed restoration of this Victorian Era hotel is impeccable, and it was an absolute honor to photograph the first wedding there. Huge thanks to Nicole Taylor for being such a gem, traveling to Rhode Island, and 2nd shooting with us.

We were so lucky, even the vendors that we had the pleasure of working with on this wedding were some of our absolute CT favorites!
Wedding Venue: The Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island
Band: Cracked Ice. Fun fact: they have quite a track record, and even performed at Obama’s Inauguration!
Allyson’s Dress: Designed by Lea Ann Belter from The Plumed Serpent in Westport, CT
Allyson’s Shoes: Manolo Blahnik. Remember this style was made famous by Sex and the City when Carrie’s were stolen in “A Women’s Right to Shoes”? I digress.
Makeup: Stacey Palancia of Blush Couture
Floral Design: Dailey’s Flower Shop of Fairfield, CT

Kimberley & Sebastian | Wedding in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

We thought we would kick off the 2010 wedding season with a bang (caribbean water & lots of sun doesn’t hurt either), so the opportunity to photograph a destination wedding in Turks & Caicos early in the season was a dream come true! What can I say…obviously, shooting Kimberley & Sebastian’s wedding in Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos Islands was absolutely incredible and we can’t thank them enough for inviting us. Eric and I had such an amazing time with these two, getting to know their family (who greeted us with open arms), and exploring Providenciales the day after the wedding to find hidden spots for a mind-blowing trash the dress session! A huge thanks to Kimberley, Sebastian, and their whole family for such an amazing experience.

Both Kimberley & Sebastian got ready at the Ocean Club Resort on the south side of Providenciales.

As mentioned, the next day we got up early and conquered the island for Kimberley & Sebastian’s trash the dress shoot. I don’t know about you, but when I travel…I eat! One thing I could not get enough of in Turks & Caicos was the Conch! It is tender like calamari, and prepared in a ton of ways (my favorite was the Conch salad which is like ceviche, citrusy and fresh — but we also LOVED the Conch fritters…best prepared at the road-side stands with a cold Turks Head Lager). We could not resist grabbing some shots at ‘Da Conch Shack, the colors and textures were unbelievable and the conch guys were more than willing to be in a few shots while hard at work early in the morning.

We did not leave a rock unturned, or beach unexplored on this trip…that’s what you do when you are on a 38 square mile island for 8 days. Our favorite beach was Taylor Bay, so it seemed the ideal location to get Kimberly (and her dress) in the water. The sand was so soft and white, the water was knee deep for 50 feet, and the water was warm and crystal clear…oh yeah, and there was barely a soul in sight. If I close my eyes really tight I can still pretend I am there…sigh.
