NEWS FLASH: Raw Photo Design Merges with Carla Ten Eyck Photography

For the past month or so Amber and I have been working on one of the most significant and far-reaching decisions we’ve ever made since starting this business. Throughout the whole process I’ve been trying to find an easy way to describe our partnership with Carla Ten Eyck Photography. Is it like a company merger? Is her company “buying us out”? Hmm… At 1am on my way home from one of our weddings this past weekend, the perfect representation popped into my head (which is how most of my ideas seem to happen).

We’re forming like VOLTRON baby! Yep, you heard right….we’re joining our individual strengths and forces together to form a super robot to defend the galaxy from evil

This is EXACTLY how it all went down at the C10 Studios headquarters!!

Ok well, we still have a long way to go before we’re able to maintain peace throughout the universe but this is a huge step in the right direction for Raw Photo Design. If you haven’t heard through the grapevine or seen on Facebook, numerous wedding forums, or twitter lately but we kind of suck at managing our business. The number of times I’ve heard the following sentence from a past client makes my stomach turn upside down and keeps me up at night trying to find a way to make things better: “Raw Photo was so awesome on the day of my wedding/boudoir/portrait/editorial/etc and I’m absolutely in love with all of my pictures…. but, it takes too long to get an email reply or phone call from them and it took a long time to get my pictures/album/disc/etc.”

Similar to most wedding photographers I started a photography business because I loved PHOTOGRAPHY. I loved working with people during their photo shoot or wedding day and capturing beautiful photographs of them. My single most favorite aspect of this job is witnessing the progression a person (or couple) goes through during a shoot… everyone always starts very nervous and insecure and somewhere in the middle of the process, they get comfortable… let their guard down, and the real them comes out…and that’s when I get to capture who they really are… You can almost see the exact moment it happens at every single session when you look at a series of photo thumbnails on your monitor. I can honestly work on anything photography related all night long without even noticing it’s 3am or that I haven’t left my desk in 6 hours. There’s no doubt it’s my passion and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

BUT, that has NOTHING to do with running a business. I’ll be the first to admit I am absolutely clueless when it comes to managing clients, employees, subcontractors, or anything else related to my business. It’s not because I haven’t done the work to learn how to properly do these things…trust me. I’ve read countless business books…some of them at least 5 times, attended numerous business workshops and seminars, downloaded every “management application” you can think of, etc. Conceptually I “know” what to do but just have no clue how to follow through with the processes and/or manage the people that I had implementing those processes.

Fast forward 5 years later to the beginning of October, 2012 and I had decided to shut Raw Photo Design down for good. I had been turning down new business for months explaining that I will no longer take new clients for the 2013 wedding season and focus all my attention on the weddings I had already booked for next year. I was stressed out beyond belief, hopeless, and defeated. Amber and I had done the best we could do with what we had and that was it. We were working like machines, day and night, and not a single client was happy. Being a typical man with too much pride, I hadn’t told anyone about our situation or my decision to dissolve the business; and being a typical woman who is way smarter than her typical man-husband, Amber had reached out to a number of close friends explaining our situation and asking for help.

Carla had been a close friend of ours for years and had seen us progress from our first wedding to our 100th wedding and has always been a huge help and inspiration since day one. She manages a well-oiled production MACHINE in Hartford. Sometimes I pull up to her driveway and I can hear the mechanical wheels turning, phones ringing off the hook, and production lines in full swing. Their customer service is incredible and a force to be reckoned with. It is pretty impressive to see and trust me…Amber and I did everything we could to implement the same system…in fact, Carla and I had first started meeting once a week a while back so that she could walk me through setting up the same system for Raw Photo. After 3 meetings or so it was pretty clear we were far beyond the point of no return and Carla presented me with a solution that her and Amber had been thought of and been working on….without me knowing!

wedding photo studio partnership

It was an offer I could not refuse. Especially since the only other option was to throw in the towel. Starting today, the C10 Studio Management Team will be responsible for ALL of the client-related office tasks and back-end studio work for RAW Photo Design including all emails, phone calls, albums, production, and delivery of finished products. Now all RAW Photo Design clients will finally get what Amber and I had TRIED to provide and what they absolutely deserve more then anything: the same AMAZING customer service that C10 Studio Management Team of Dominique, Julie, Rebecca, Dave, Jazzy and Philitha have been providing for Carla and her associates for years!

Where does that leave Amber and myself? It leaves us focusing ALL of our attention, time, and resources on where they should be: the creative work. This is what we are good at, enjoy doing, and jump out of bed in the morning just thinking of it. It is why I started the business in the first place…THE PHOTOGRAPHY….NOT the business. I’m drooling just thinking about it, “You mean I get to do what I’ve always wanted to do and you will do the rest?” I swear it is Christmas a month early at the Langlois household and I just got the gift of photography for the first time in 4 years!

The finer details are being sent to existing clients as everyone is reading this but in a nutshell RAW Photo Design will still be OUR brand…same website, same look, same awesomeness. Zero portion of the photography, retouching, or awesome sauce that has defined the RAW Photo brand and style will change because Amber and myself will still be in charge of all of it. In fact, it will only improve and thrive now that we don’t have to spend so much time on what we suck at: business. We’ll finally get to spend all of our time and energy on the reason I started this business in the first place: photography.

Wedding at The Greentree Country Club in New Rochelle, NY | Colleen & Sean

I decided Colleen is that classic LUXE bride, a new term I discovered since recently collaborating with Flosites. She is elegant, luxurious, glamorous, and classic. The stunning Kleinfeld gown and Jimmy Choo heels say it all.

elegant editorial fashion wedding photography off camera flash wedding photography trash the dress modern bridal shoot

Flosites is helping us develop new branding and a new blog, and I love how this project is challenging us to think about our clients and their identity like we never have before. All of it is ridiculously exciting, and we have been pulling all kinds of inspiration together and putting a lot of thought into who we actually are and what our photography is all about?! Seems like something we should know, but the reality is, our “style” of photography has morphed into what you see almost by itself.

We have been consistently photographing what we are passionate about every year…and we are openly inspired by many different things every day – there was never a strategic plan that brought us to where we are now, and almost without noticing we have evolved into a very different brand than we started as initially. Not sure if that even makes sense?!

Regardless, a brand overhaul is long overdue and we are ecstatic to get our images into a more stylish home.

Our baby blog is about to become a big girl blog.

Now, onto our favorites from Colleen and Sean’s stunning country club wedding in New Rochelle, NY. Thank you to Bart for 2nd shooting with us like a rock star!

Wedding at The Inn at Longshore in Westport, CT | Stephanie & Brad

Freeze. Let it load.

In this business, we gush over details. We are privileged to be part of so many weddings, visit many venues all over, and I can say for certain that above all things, it is the tiny details that we remember. When a couple takes the time and puts the thought and energy into the small stuff, like Stephanie and Brad did, something magical happens (even at a venue that we have visited many times).

Here are some killer, OMG, amazeball shots from Stephanie and Brad’s wedding day at The Inn at Longshore in Westport, CT.

Before I proceed. Can we all just take a moment of silence, for Stephanie’s dress?
This is the stand out dress of the year, the “Dahlia…with hand-pleated Taffeta floral embroidery”, her stunning, modern (yet timeless gown) is designed by Amsale Blue Label, check out the entire line of tulle, silk taffeta, and all those feminine details that are to die for.

Ok, now I can carry on.

Abandoned Factory Bridal Shoot in Branford, CT | Marcie & Mike

Marcie and Mike are great friends of ours and also happen to be the super hot photographers of Maler Photography. We were not available to photograph their wedding last year, but we were lucky enough to photograph a ridiculous bridal shoot for them in an abandoned factory. The Maler’s are an insanely photogenic couple who are willing to do anything and these shots are straight up FIRE. Eric and I had a blast on this shoot, clearly.

Trash the Dress Photos at Collinsville Axe Factory in Canton, CT | Amy

The rent-a-cop patrolling the Bennett School for Girls in Millbrook, New York quickly made a shoot we had been looking forward to an immediate fail of epic proportions. Apparently this guy was waiting for the day to bust some “jokers” trying to trespass at the abandoned school for some insanely awesome pictures. Normally a bride in her dress is enough to bend the rules, but this guy was all business. When Amy booked us for her wedding, she had seen Candice’s Trash the Dress session that we had done in Millbrook, NY at the Bennett School, and she knew that a shoot like this was something that she had to do! So, fast forward through two engagement sessions in two states, Amy & Brian’s rad wedding at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station, and we arrive at Amy’s Trash the Dress to be told no by this guy patrolling the property! Total buzz kill to say the least, but it gave Eric the opportunity to ask some friends and do some research on a location to shoot the Trash the Dress Amy had been looking forward to. Everything does happen for a reason, because the Collinsville Axe Factory in Canton, CT turned out to be off the wall and Eric always loves to scope out a new location for the first time. Fun facts? “The Collins Company Axe Factory is situated along the Farmington River, and was a world renowned manufacturer of tools, such as axes, machetes, picks and knives. They were used to construct the Trans-Siberian Railroad as well as in the California Gold Rush. The company closed in 1966, but the buildings of the factory are still used by local businesses.”

If Eric could shoot these sessions more often he would be the happiest guy ever, I think people are hesitant because they do not want to “trash their dress”, and I just want to say, for the record, we don’t want you to either. We see these images as a way to get some pictures in your dress that are a complete departure from the look that you wore on your wedding. You can funk it up a little, take a little risk with your look that wasn’t ideal on your wedding day and then you step into an unexpected location.

Did you know that your wedding dress is really our boss on your wedding day? May sound crazy, but a lot of choices we make throughout the wedding day pertaining to photography are largely dictated by your dress. We have an unspoken responsibility to not take you somewhere that you will get dirty, not pose you in a spot that smashes all the tulle and wrinkles all that satin, and we are very cautious but rarely ever ask you to sit, lay, or walk far in that white dress. Even if you are cool with it, your mom probably isn’t…and we like to keep her smiling all day.

So, this shoot isn’t about ruining that dress your wore once and may cost as much as a 1995 VW, it is about wearing that dress as a model, not as a bride. It is about not rushing to your cocktail hour, stressing about place cards, or anticipating the next big moment of your big day – IT IS JUST ALL about the pictures….No wonder why we love it!

Amy’s hawt Hair & Makeup: Stacey Palancia of Blush Couture and a big thanks to Janet Taub for shooting and assisting with me. We really missed working with Amy once the wedding was over, but lucky for us, she is preggers and we are hoping it doesn’t affect her job as president of our fan club, bring on the maternity and newborn shoots! Love you guys, congratulations and enjoy these.

Simply Sparkling CT Wedding at The Riverview in Simsbury | Lauren & TJ

Who’s ready for Wedding Season?! I have to say if this year continues on these same feet that we have started off on, we are about to have a very EPIC season.

Lauren and TJ’s wedding at The Riverview in Simsbury, CT was not lacking in sophistication, glamour, or style by any measure. Lauren is a talented hair stylist, who also happens to be stylish and completely adorable. Her colleagues from Somers Day Spa were in full force for getting ready at Lauren’s mom’s home in Somers, and it is a good thing – with over 10 girls to beautify in Lauren’s bridal party!

You know me, so before I get carried away talking about Louboutins, Tulle Pouf Veils and Hot Pink Lips…I am gonna let you swoon over a few favorites. come on, how pretty is she?

I can’t even pretend, but I am straight up over the moon about Lauren’s tulle pouf veil. Clean, simple, fashion-forward, without being too, you know, veil-y.

Don’t get me wrong, i’ll play out the birdcage veil with the best of them, but this, in my opinion, was so fresh and fun. And…I am in love with a bride that doesn’t take it all so serious, my kinda lady. So, I did a little digging on Etsy, and there are lots of funky options for this look, I even love the idea of throwing this guy in for a few poses or portraits on the wedding day (if it is not something that you want to wear all day), check her out!

ridiculous-ness.

Thank you to our favorites, our very own associate photographer, Joanne Vandal, for shooting with us and Rob O’Brien for assisting us with lights and photobooth like NO ONE else. And this is how Eric and I get the Getting Ready Done.

While shooting getting ready with the girls, I became totally caught up in the very sweet interaction between Lauren and her mom (who, by the way, is also stunning). I watched and loved every minute of them literally putting each other together from head to toe. One minute Lauren is taking down her mom’s rollers, then hopping back into final touches on makeup, these two were just too cute and so happy to be sharing the day together!

Joanne knocked our socks off with this shot of Lauren as she enters the All Saints Church in Somers, CT to walk down the aisle.

Not sure what it is about Joanne and churches, but she consistently kills ceremony shots – not gonna lie, these two images inflicted goosebumps.

I am going to just state the obvious, Lauren and TJ have a lot of friends. We decided Hartford City Hall would be a dynamic picture location for a large group, and lucky for us they worked it, really good stuff.

For this shot, Eric and Joanne had gone upstairs to begin the bridal portraits while Rob and I packed some of our gear back up quickly. As soon as Rob was good, I ran upstairs to join Joanne and Eric, camera in hand. I was psyched to come around the corner, see this shot, grab my camera and fire one picture before Eric moved on to the next pose. So lucky I was on the right channel to fire the flash, clearly, it was meant to be. And clearly, I am a Photographer/Ninja.

Lauren and TJ went all out to transform The Riverview. The uplighting, the lounge furniture set up and white linen panels really made the space beautiful and so much fun to shoot.

These next 3 images taken by Joanne are such sweet moments, I am so happy she focused on Lauren watching the Mother Son dance, come on, how sweet is that?!

I also completely LOVE Sal and Alia, they are a favorite RAW wedding couple that we shot in Stratton, VT…and they were both in Lauren and TJ’s bridal party! You see, Alia is French Canadian, so Eric and I naturally meshed right into their family, and seeing our old friends at weddings makes our day insanely fun. And actually…seeing Alia’s Dad on any occasion would be insanely fun.

Cutest idea ever! For Lauren’s dress change mid reception, she wore her Grandmother’s wedding dress, which she had transformed into a modern, short cocktail dress…it was completely HOT and sentimental, therefore a total win in my book. Loved the idea, but have a feeling that Lauren is one of the few that could pull this look off so effortlessly. Agreed?

Alice in Wonderland themed CT Wedding at The Barns | Anna & Matt

I am not even going to try to compete with the perfectly descriptive content written by my girl Candice, of Jubilee Events for Anna and Matt’s wedding feature on Style Me Pretty. We are so excited to see this wedding on the Style Me Pretty blog because…

1. IT’S STRAIGHT UP HELICOPTERS (a.k.a INSANE, according to Matt this saying is the next big thing)
2. we have no patience and have been dying to share these images
3. this wedding was a complete labor of love, not only by the couple and their families, but every vendor involved went above and beyond

And let me tell you – some magic happened.

Here are our favorite images from Anna & Matt’s wedding day and definitely check out Style Me Pretty for the full gallery, it is a total dreamy, detaily, feast for your eyes.

from Jubilee Events…A wedding with so many carefully thought out details: that was the story of Anna and Matt. They started their planning journey with a rocky start– troubled by hardships. Luckily, they entered a contest on Style Me Pretty and were chosen to receive a wedding with support by a lot of special vendors, including Jessica’s Country Flowers, who organized the give-a-way and designed all of their flowers.

They were destined to have an Alice in Wonderland styled wedding on the last weekend of summer, surrounded by 150 of their nearest and dearest. Mostly do-it-yourself, they took on a ton of projects to truly make their wedding their own. From fabric pennant flags that the bride sewed, to the wedding paper suite expertly designed by the groom (with a little help from an amazing illustrator Krista Wildermuth). Perhaps the most amazing piece of homemade décor was the antique door we suspended above their long, family style head table with dozens of antique medicine bottles hanging above like a chandelier. The sweetest part of their story is they were inspired by so many blogs and other couples!…click here to read more.

Rustic New England Bridal Session in Hamden, CT | Suzanna

This shoot is tantalizing, in a sexy “come hither” sort of way. We are looking to explode this little area of Raw Photo Design, and I can tell you that after seeing Suzanna’s pictures below…it will take very little convincing. Between you and I, we get a little strangled by the limitations that we have shooting a bride on her wedding day. I mean…I’ve done it, so I get it…but if Eric has a ridiculous idea in the moment on a wedding day (which often happens) that requires sitting or laying, etc., we usually gotta just toss it because no bride wants to sit anywhere that is not squeaky clean on her wedding day. Well…you know us, we are not squeaky clean, that’s not how we roll.

This is why a bridal session (no, you do not have to trash your dress) can be the most fun, relaxed, ridiculous way to get uninhibited pictures different than those you took on your wedding day. Bring your groom or don’t…that’s your call. But Suzanna is a perfect example of how this session can really take on a personality of it’s own, and on your wedding day you gotta play it safe —- so for this type of shoot we strive for editorial.

We want the hair that you really wanted for your wedding day {but wouldn’t dare}, the shoes you really wanted for your wedding day {but couldn’t walk in}, and the location and posing is just a canvas that you step into – and completely let go.

For those of you that do not recall Suzanna’s wedding blog post, I suggest checking it out here prior to indulging in this shoot. Her wedding images are stunning, we had lots of time, shot at some of the most iconic places in Manhattan and even took time after the reception to grab more.

You can see from the post below that this shoot is a drastic departure from the city vibe of her wedding images. How much fun is it to play with two completely dynamic looks? Different, yet equally yummy.

Now I ask you and encourage you to comment below…which bridals do you prefer? A huge thanks to Stacey Palancia of Blush Couture for some ridiculously epic make-up skills.

Wedding at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station in Haddam, CT | Amy & Brian

We are incredibly fortunate that every wedding season we have a few couples that really stand out, and remind us how lucky we are to have the coolest freaking job in the world. Wedding details are not even a factor in what makes them so special to us, it is simply about who they are and how they treat people…we are instantly inspired and energized by their enthusiasm and appreciation for what we do.

Undoubtedly, Amy and Brian are one of those special couples that have touched us in a really BIG way. Amy, who, rightfully so, is the self-appointed President of the Raw Photo Design fan club, had initially contacted us way back in September 2009 about her 2010 wedding at The Riverhouse in Haddam, CT. As many of you know, we are intensely passionate about our work and have realized that there is nothing more fulfilling than working with those clients that “get it” and truly see something distinctive in our photography. It is the ideal partnership. Everyone wins.

Honestly, I am certain that we are better photographers today for having the opportunity to get to know and work with Amy and Brian. We want to thank you guys for leaving the first thoughtful comment on almost every blog post we publish, sharing kind, thoughtful words with us during a very difficult time, the bottles of Layer Cake that you had delivered – my new favorite shiraz, and for your infinite generosity and appreciation – seriously, thank you.

So….I am guessing that you are ready to see your off-the-hook wedding pictures?

Montreal Bridal Session in Quebec, Canada | Nancy & Fred

One Dilemma that we face as wedding photographers is that there are only so many Saturdays in a year! It wouldn’t be as much of an issue if you were all into February weddings, but the limited season in the Northeast – makes our availability even slimmer. Why am I complaining? Well…Eric’s cousin Nancy and her fiance contacted us 6 months prior to their scheduled wedding in Banff, Alberta, Canada and guess what? We were booked. Banff is a place that we have heard absolutely amazing things about and is on our list of places we must shoot a wedding at, and, turning down a relative or close friend is always a total buzz kill!

The Compromise. We had plans to visit family in Canada, so obviously, a day after bridal session for Nancy and Fred in Montreal, Canada HAD to be on the itinerary. Although we visit family in Canada a few times a year, we did not know exactly what to expect from this shoot. There is a bit of a language barrier since all of the Langlois’ primarily speak french, but these two (I am sure you will agree)…COMPLETELY KILLED it. The images are mind blowing, they rocked the posing, gave us some smoking hot expressions, and were completely in love. We absolutely fell in love with every part of Montreal and honestly did NOT want to leave. It was one of those locations that (I’m sure all you photographers can relate) can take wedding and bridal session photos at all daaaaay looooong. The excitement just could NOT be contained and with every photo we took we fell more in love with the architecture and personality that Montreal had to offer.

It was SO much fun photographing Nancy & Fred after their wedding, and being in kick-a** city as cool as Montreal was icing on the cake.

We primarily shot in the Old Montreal area of the city which is definitely one of the coolest urban areas I’ve ever visited. Here, Nancy and Fred are rockin’ it in front of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel right near the Port of Montreal.
Trash the Dress Wedding photos in Montreal Canada by Raw Photo Design

One of the coolest aspects of Montreal, especially from a photographer’s stand point is how different each section of the city looks with just a short walk. Here we are in the Port of Montreal featuring modern art work and colors, only minutes from the gothic style architecture so prevalent in the Old Montreal section of the city.

Of course….before we ask anyone to run across traffic with a wedding dress on we better have our lighting and composition down first. So….here’s Amber testing out our lighting set-up. The expression on the guy’s face in the background is priceless!!

So….this was the last photo we got from the day right before we got BUSTED!!!! It was actually pretty funny but we got busted by the Port Authority of Montreal and they were PISSED! Apparently taking photos on trains in the Port is NOT cool according to them. I wanted to show them the picture to prove that yes indeed, it is cool. But decided not to. I was so proud of Amber when I saw her finger on her shutter grabbing photos (not bad for not looking in the viewfinder!)

Kimberley & Sebastian | Wedding in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

We thought we would kick off the 2010 wedding season with a bang (caribbean water & lots of sun doesn’t hurt either), so the opportunity to photograph a destination wedding in Turks & Caicos early in the season was a dream come true! What can I say…obviously, shooting Kimberley & Sebastian’s wedding in Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos Islands was absolutely incredible and we can’t thank them enough for inviting us. Eric and I had such an amazing time with these two, getting to know their family (who greeted us with open arms), and exploring Providenciales the day after the wedding to find hidden spots for a mind-blowing trash the dress session! A huge thanks to Kimberley, Sebastian, and their whole family for such an amazing experience.

Both Kimberley & Sebastian got ready at the Ocean Club Resort on the south side of Providenciales.

As mentioned, the next day we got up early and conquered the island for Kimberley & Sebastian’s trash the dress shoot. I don’t know about you, but when I travel…I eat! One thing I could not get enough of in Turks & Caicos was the Conch! It is tender like calamari, and prepared in a ton of ways (my favorite was the Conch salad which is like ceviche, citrusy and fresh — but we also LOVED the Conch fritters…best prepared at the road-side stands with a cold Turks Head Lager). We could not resist grabbing some shots at ‘Da Conch Shack, the colors and textures were unbelievable and the conch guys were more than willing to be in a few shots while hard at work early in the morning.

We did not leave a rock unturned, or beach unexplored on this trip…that’s what you do when you are on a 38 square mile island for 8 days. Our favorite beach was Taylor Bay, so it seemed the ideal location to get Kimberly (and her dress) in the water. The sand was so soft and white, the water was knee deep for 50 feet, and the water was warm and crystal clear…oh yeah, and there was barely a soul in sight. If I close my eyes really tight I can still pretend I am there…sigh.

Best of 2009 Weddings | Bridal Portraits

Wow, hands down, Favorite Category. We have the Raddest couples in the world! I am not sure if it is just because we enjoy taking our couples away from their reception, making them stand very still, and setting up the tripod so we can get an in focus night shot with crazy sky, and insane lighting….or if it is just because every wedding deserves an Epic Money Shot! Some of these are “Day After” sessions, some are actual weddings, 2 are me (from our Winvian workshop earlier this year)…they are only posted because Eric claims they 2 of his favorite pictures that he has ever taken (he’s the sweetest for saying so).

Trash the Dress Session in New Milford, CT | Shannon & Anthony

Shannon and Anthony had Gods of Rain pay them a visit on their wedding day which, of course, totally bummed all of us out. We were able to get some killer indoor shots but it left Shannon aching for some bright, yummy outdoor photos in her wedding dress. Of course the answer is to book a trash the dress bridal photo session! Anthony was dying to get Shannon in the water and despite the frigid temperatures she was totally braved and jumped in for a minute!

I’m going to go with these two as my ultimate faves…

Destination Bridal Photography Session in San Francisco, CA | LaRue & Brian

For this post (and these images) to accurately tell the story, I have to go back…actually way back to the beginning of our journey with LaRue & Brian. I know most of you probably skip right down to the images, but for those of you that need the details…sit back & enjoy. Also…reading the long version of my short story will give time for all of the EPIC images time to load.

So this one time, a super sweet girl, we’ll call her LaRue (because that’s her name) wanted to give her two best friends, Kelly & Nando, a kick *ss gift for their engagement. Since Kelly & Nando were already fans of our work and had discussed having us photograph her wedding, LaRue contacted us to get details on giving them an engagement photography session in Baltimore, MD as a gift. For those of you that don’t know, Eric’s academic career began in Baltimore and it’s a very special place to us…it was really a no brainer to head down to Charm City for Kelly & Nando’s engagement shoot! We ended up hitting it off so well with Kelly & Nando that we were even lucky enough to photograph their wedding this past summer. Anyway, up until this point we obviously knew that LaRue was super cool girl and an awesome friend, but the best part is that she was one of Kelly’s bridesmaids, so when we actually got to meet her at the wedding we realized that her and her husband, Brian, are also a blast! At Kelly & Nando’s wedding, LaRue had a chance to chat with Eric about the possibility of scheduling a day after bridal photography session for her to wear her dress again with the goal of getting some of the more artistic, edgy images (that she didn’t have on her wedding day). Well, the answer was yes…but, quickly became HELL YES when LaRue went on to explain that she wanted her pictures taken in San Francisco, California, where her and Brian live and both work for Apple in Silicon Valley (had to throw that in because it makes us love them even more). Lucky for us LaRue meant business, and we were scheduled to fly out to San Francisco for their shoot within a few weeks.

Eric & I had never been to San Francisco, so we relied on LaRue & Brian to show us the ropes, and I have to say, nothing is better than visiting a city with people who know where to eat & what to see. We are so insanely grateful and fortunate for the experience that we had because not only did we visit the “main attractions”, like the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco City Hall, and Lombard Street but…we also visited some insanely cool local spots on Haight Street, our absolute faves were: food at Cha! Cha! Cha!, cocktails at The Alembic Bar, and shopping at Kids Only where we bought the kids these rockin’ New Skool headphone hoodies designed by Bay Area Designer and Graffiti Artist, Nate1.

First….Eric wanted everyone to know that this is his favorite :)

LaRue & Brian – Thank you again for showing us your awesome city, being such great hosts, and letting us capture the whole thing from beginning to end! This trip far exceeded our expectations and we definitely have to get back there with the kiddies to see everything we missed.

We started our San Francisco adventure out and about the Golden Gate Bridge… Can you spot the plane? I didn’t even notice it until I was reviewing the photos at home!

But not to worry, LaRue and Brian got us into the incredible San Francisco City Hall….another iconic San Francisco landmark.

Trash the Dress Photo Session in Manhattan, New York | Danielle & Ian

So maybe you didn’t get the artistic, unique pictures that you really wanted on your wedding day (don’t feel bad, we didn’t either). Maybe when you look at your wedding pictures you are thankful for the moments captured, but feel that your connection to each other was not accurately portrayed. Or possibly you didn’t have the time needed on your wedding day to get the images that you hoped for…

If you identify with the first paragraph or just didn’t realize that wedding pictures had the potential to be out of this world, then a bridal/day after/or trash the dress session is an amazing opportunity to have the pictures that you deserve. We haven’t settled on the name that we want to use for these sessions going forward (new website launching soon), we dislike “trash the dress” because we really prefer that you didn’t trash it. We just want you to sit in it, lay in it, and let us do our thing (you know those things that most brides are not down with the day of their wedding).

Enter Ian & Danielle, the VERY cool friends of our friends and past wedding couple, Jill & Jared. When I met Danielle she was itching to wear her gown again, and then after seeing Jill’s pictures she was really excited to schedule a session with Eric and I. The best part is, Ian & Danielle gave us full creative license to do what we wanted, where we wanted…so we decided to shoot at night for the first time in the Meat Packing District in New York City. To contribute to the styling of the shoot Eric and I knew floral design would be important and Melissa from Stylish Blooms jumped at the opportunity to provide the bouquet and boutonniere…literally. We discussed the shoot with her late the night before and told her that we would need everything early, and the next thing that Eric remembers is waking up in the hallway at 7 am with a bouquet in his hand (Melissa came to drop everything off, Eric and I were still sleeping and our 3 year old let her right into our house…where she was greeted by Eric half asleep, completely confused and in his underwear). Do we know how to make a first impression or what Melissa? Hopefully the images we took make up for that introduction. Thank you also to Lindsey Gallagher for an excellent job on Danielle’s hair & makeup.

Nigh-time is when Meatpacking in Manhattan comes alive, so we hit up some spots on Greenwich & Gansevoort, the High Line (until we were kicked out), and then wrapped it all up over some late-night dinner at Pastis. It was a great evening, with a great couple – and we hope you enjoy the pictures!

Danielle=super-star!!

Inspiration: Bonnie & Clyde | bridal session in Danbury, CT with Konrad & Ela

We know that we seriously have the best job in the world, we rave about our couples, our weddings, and our experiences all the time. But one thing we go gaga about are those opportunities that require us to dig into our “Vault of Inspiration” (yes…it is a real folder that exists on our server of scanned magazine tear outs, movie posters, artwork, sketches, you know…anything that moves us, or gives us goosebumps in some way). We have so many ideas that we have yet to use, and when we come across a couple that completely trusts us and is willing to grant us creative license, we dive in and let magic happen.

For Ela and Konrad (RAD photographer from Visual Obsession) we knew that the iconic 1920′s couple, Bonnie & Clyde were the concept and inspiration we could all really get excited about. To set the stage for our “lovers on the run”, we chose a local train yard…..definitely a place we will revisit to shoot!

Our story begins with Miss Bonnie Parker. Bonnie is bored with life and wants a change. She gets her chance when she meets a charming young drifter by the name of Clyde Barrow. Clyde has dreams of a life of crime that will free him from the hardships of the Depression. Bonnie is instantly charmed by Clyde’s rough exterior and striking looks.

The two fall in love and begin a crime spree that extends from Oklahoma to Texas. They rob small banks with skill and panache, soon becoming minor celebrities known across the country. People are proud to have been held up by Bonnie and Clyde; to their victims, the duo is doing what nobody else has the guts to do. To the law, the two are evil bank robbers who deserve to be gunned down where they stand.

After holding up yet, another local bank they rush to the train yard to hop the next line toward Houston.

Clyde Barrow, recently out of prison, turned to bank robbery to free himself from a life of hardship and manual labor. Bonnie Parker was looking for anything to free herself from the same daily routine she had grown to hate. Together they found how much they craved and needed each other.

Their train arrives and they head to yet another unsuspected southwest town to terrorize anything in their path.

Finally, they arrive at their next destination: Houston. The couple plans on hitting their next target by sundown and finding shelter anywhere they can find.

Little did the couple know, the local authorities were waiting for them. The closest place they could find to take cover was a cemetery…..the same one Clyde’s prison mate was buried in three years earlier.

Known for his skepticism Clyde was never able to trust anyone or anything. Bonnie knew that Clyde could snap at the drop of a hat but nothing could have prepared Bonnie for what happened next. Paranoia got the best of Clyde and he was convinced Bonnie had contacted the authorities and struck a plea bargain.

Finally, Bonnie convinces Clyde of her innocence but not before the authorities arrive.....and claim their lives.....

Day After Session in Branford, CT | Melissa & Greg

It happens often when a couple calls us to shoot their wedding and we’re unfortunately already booked – such was the case with Melissa & Greg. Did that stop them? Heck no! They decided to do a day-after session (literally THE day after their wedding!!!) at a beautiful home in Branford, CT overlooking the Thimble Islands. What’s a day-after session you ask? Well…..think of it as a Trash the Dress session without all the trashing! Thanks again to Melissa & Greg for being so awesome and hope you’re enjoying the married life!

I love both of their expressions here when Greg accidentally stepped on Melissa’s veil.  I’m *guessing* she wouldn’t have thought it was as funny it happened the day before on their actual wedding!
