The RAW Photography Workshop :: The Super-Long Post!

Shooting weddings like crazy, and most of you know that during this time of year there is very little time to brush our teeth, never mind extra curricular activities. But… because we LOVE what we do, we wanted to test drive our first workshop. For this round we asked a few colleagues who are lucky enough to already know our quirks and crazy sense of humor (aren’t they lucky). But because it went SO well and we received such awesome feedback we will DEFINITELY be holding another one soon, completely open to anyone and everyone!
A huge thanks to Heather, Rebecca, and Dana from the Winvian in Morris, CT for being such gracious hosts. We are so excited to work with you again and your venue is amazing! Tony & Cat from Datura were the mad scientist floral sculptors for the day and they definitely did not disappoint. All of the flowers were absolutely incredible!! Beth from the White Dress by the Shore was so generous in contributing a beautiful Anne Barge gown for Amber to wear.
We started the day with a quick review of everything we were going to cover but then got right into shooting!
First up….

The main goal of the workshop was about finding the light….to learn and understand everything we can about the light we are working with. Being wedding photographers we rarely get to choose the type of light that we work with so it is up to us to adapt for every type of situation. And it was definitely FULL sun out at 10 am in Morris. So, we experimented with different ways to rock full sun!

Then it was off to work indoors with some available window light!

After lunch it was time to rock out with Lisa & Dan!! They came all the way up from North Carolina to help us out and they could not have done a more AMAZING job…especially with about 10 cameras in their faces!!

We worked on how to pose a couple in available full sun-
Lisa looked absolutely incredible!
Dan was not to be outdone – looking awesome buddy!
We then headed inside to one of many amazing cottages on the grounds of the Winvian and worked with available light and other indoor lighting methods-
Yeah….there was just a few cameras in Lisa & Dan’s face!
I really wanted to teach everyone how to ‘make something out of nothing’ which of course was impossible at the Winvian because every square foot of the place was incredible! But…we tried anyway….here Lisa and Dan were actually in the shower!
Then it was off to the next cottage-
Then it was back outdoors for some ‘free shooting’ – we broke into teams and worked with Lisa, Dan, and Amber-

When the workshop was over Amber and I stayed at the Winvian to play around with some ideas I have for the next workshop! I mean….when else will we be in an awesome location with Amber in a gorgeous dress??!!
I’ve been wanting to take a shot like this for a REALLY long time but just needed the right person to talk into taking a picture up their dress 
Another idea I’ve been play with for a while….
Now…for the hugest shout-out ever! Everything was put together by Amber…the vendors…the location….the attendees…thank you so much! You were sooo right and I can’t believe I waited this long!

Huge thanks to you, Eric and Amber! Thanks for taking time out of your hectic schedules to teach us and guess what?!? My exposures have improved exponentially! Eric, your passion is contagious and can Amber be any cuter – especially when she was chugging straight from the bottle to relax?! I hope I’ll be available for the next one. — and Athena, that’s what it was all about. It makes me SO happy that you have seen an improvement. We do not claim to be experts by any means, but there are a few things that Eric is killer at, and he is a good, patient teacher! Eric – I may have been the coordinator, but without your ridiculous talent, this could never have happened. You are an inspiration to so many people, and this was proof. SO — we have some ideas in the works for our next one, but what do all of you think Eric should cover? Let us know, we are curious!

Off the hook my friend. Too many favorites to list. The shots inside the buildings are especially WOW. I’m not even sure what they are, but those big mossy balls (yes I said big mossy balls) on the floor are cool as hell. Tony and Cat come up with the coolest stuff!

I think your work is just amazing. I love your creative approach to shooting and would love to know when the next workshop is so I can take advantage of it. I love seeing and learning from other professionals in the industry. Is there a way to sign up for it? Thanks for sharing….. your work is truly inspirational!
